Rift vs Motion, the video agent

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Motion is a video agent on the web that builds and edits a video from footage, a brief or a reference, and exports to Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Rift is an iPhone app where you share a video, tell Spark what to change, and tap Make. Pick Motion if you finish in an editor; pick Rift for the finished clip without editing.

Motion and Rift both put an agent between you and the edit, but they start from different places. Motion is built for people who work in a desktop editor. Rift is built for people holding an iPhone who want a clip they can post. We make Rift, so every Motion fact below comes from Motion’s own page, with the date we looked.

What each one is

Motion’s site describes a video agent that plans the video, builds the shots, edits them and checks the cut. You can give it footage, writing, a reference or an idea, or paste a link to a video. After the first cut you can reply in chat, mark up the preview or edit the timeline.

Rift starts from a video you saw or a photo you have. You share it into Rift, tell Spark what to change, check the Draft, and tap Make. There is no timeline to open afterwards.

Take one video you like and a clear photo or footage of your own. See how much work is left after the first result, and whether you can post it from where you are. If we have got something wrong about Motion, tell us and we will fix this page.

What we don’t say

We don’t claim Rift is cheaper, quicker or better. They suit different people. We also leave out anything about Motion we could not read on its own pages.
