Why the AI video doesn't look like you, and how to fix it

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Most likeness problems come from the photo: filters, sunglasses, low light, a tilted head or an old picture. Use a recent, unfiltered, face-to-camera photo in daylight, add a second photo from another angle, and save yourself as a character. Pick clips where the face is large and turned toward the camera. In Rift, tell Spark, Rift's video agent, what's off and Make again.

When a remake looks like your cousin instead of you, the cause is usually the photo or the clip you started with. Change one thing at a time using the fixes below. The basics of remaking a trend with you in it are in how to put yourself in a TikTok trend.

1. The photo

Fix: a recent, unfiltered photo, face to camera, eye level, in daylight.

2. Only one angle

A single front photo has to guess your profile.

Fix: save yourself as a character from two or three photos: front, three-quarter, full body.

3. The clip

Fix: pick clips where the face is clear and large, or ask for “just the part where she faces the camera”.

4. Say what’s off

In Rift, tell Spark plainly: “my nose is narrower”, “I have a beard”, “with my glasses”, “my hair is curlier”. It updates the Draft; check it before you Make.

Questions people ask

Why does it look younger or smoother than me?

Beauty filters on the photo. Use an unfiltered photo.

Why does my face change when I turn?

One front photo leaves the side to guess. Add a photo of your profile or three-quarter view.

Why are my glasses gone?

Use a photo where you wear them, and say "with my glasses".

Does the video clip matter?

Yes. Tiny, far-away or blurred faces are hard for any app. Pick clips with clear faces.
