How to turn one photo into a bullet-time, clone or earth zoom video

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Add one photo to Rift, then tell Spark the effect you want, like bullet time, a row of clones, an earth zoom, a vanish or a melt. Spark sets up a Draft with the price on the Make button. Tap Make and you get a video of up to 15 seconds in your Library. Rift is an iPhone app, and one photo is enough.

Some effects used to need a rig of cameras or a weekend in an editing app. Now you can name the effect in a few words and give Spark a single photo to start from.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Open Rift and add your photo. Choose it from your camera roll.
  2. Name the effect. Tell Spark in one line, for example “bullet time around me”.
  3. Check the Draft. Spark plans the shots and shows a Draft. The price is on the Make button.
  4. Make. Tap Make. Leave the app if you like, and Spark tells you when it is ready.
  5. Adjust and go again. Ask for a slower swing, a closer start or a different ending, and Make again.

Tips for one-photo effects

Reading the result

Watch the first second and the last second. The first tells you if Spark understood your photo; the last tells you if it understood the ending. If the start is wrong, swap the photo for a cleaner one. If the ending is wrong, say it in words: “end on the empty street” or “end on my face, smiling”. Small changes like these keep what already works, and the Draft shows the price each time before you tap Make.

Make a few versions of the same effect with different photos. The effect that looks flat on a seated pose often sings on a walking one, and you only find out by trying.

Beyond people

Product photos suit melts and vanishes, a house photo suits an earth zoom, and a pet photo suits clones. If you can describe it in a sentence, you can try it.

Questions people ask

Do I need a video of myself?

No. One photo is enough. Spark builds the motion from it.

What is bullet time?

It is the frozen-moment effect where the camera swings around someone mid-action. Ask for it by name and say what they are doing.

Can I use a photo of my pet or car?

Yes. Effects work on anything with a clear shape in the photo, like a dog mid-jump or a car on an empty road.

What if the effect looks off?

Tell Spark what to change, for example "slower" or "closer to the face", and Make again.

Which effects can I name?

Bullet time, a clone effect and an earth zoom, each from one photo. Describe the effect in a few words.
