How to turn a photo of you or your family into an old 8mm home-movie clip

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Add a photo of yourself or your family in Rift and tell Spark, Rift's video agent, to make it look like a home movie from the 1970s: warm faded colour, film grain, a little flicker, a simple moment like waving or blowing out candles. Check the Draft, tap Make, and you get a clip of up to 15 seconds in your Library.

Add a photo and Spark gives it the warm colour, shake and grain of an 8mm home movie.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Add the photo in Rift.
  2. Tell Spark the era and the moment.
  3. Check the Draft. Make sure clothes and setting fit the decade.
  4. Tap Make once you have seen the price on the button.
  5. Open your Library and share it with the family.

Questions people ask

Is it the same as restoring an old photo?

No. This starts from a modern photo and gives it the look of old film. Restoring fixes a real old photo.

Can I choose the decade?

Yes. Say the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s and Spark changes the colour, clothes and set to match.

Do I need everyone's OK?

Ask any family member or friend before you post a video of them. A private family chat is fine for a surprise.

Can I add the crackle of a projector?

Sound isn't in the app yet. Add it in your video or messaging app.
