AI video or hiring a videographer: how to choose

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Hire a videographer when you need real footage of real places and people, an event covered live, or a crew with lights and sound. Use an AI video app when you want a short clip from photos or an idea, such as a trend, a pet scene or a product shot. Rift is an iPhone app where Spark, Rift's video agent, plans a clip up to 15 seconds from what you show it.

These are different tools for different jobs. The useful question is what you need the video to be.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Write down what the video must show. Real people and places, or an idea?
  2. If it must be real, book a videographer.
  3. If it’s a short clip from photos, tell Spark the scene in Rift.
  4. Check the Draft, then tap Make.
  5. Mix both when a project needs real footage and a quick extra.

Tips

Questions people ask

Can AI video replace a videographer?

For some short clips, it can stand in. For live events, interviews and real footage, a person with a camera is the right choice.

Does Rift need a crew or equipment?

No. Share a video or add photos from your camera roll, tell Spark what you want, check the Draft and tap Make.

What does a videographer do that an app can't?

Capture real moments, direct people, handle lighting and record sound.

Can Rift add narration to an ad?

Narration isn't in the app yet, and neither are music or text over video. Rift makes clips up to 15 seconds.
