What is the glow-up swipe trend and how do you make one?

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

The glow-up swipe is a short video or carousel that shows a plain before and a polished after, often with a self-mocking line. The same pose and angle make the change obvious. To make one in Rift, add your before photo, tell Spark the change, check the Draft and tap Make.

The glow-up swipe has a simple shape: a plain, honest before, a swipe or cut, and an after that makes people stop. A short line often goes with it, like a self-roast over the before.

What the format looks like

Why it works

Matching angles make the change legible in one second. The before is relatable and the after is a treat. People watch it for the gap.

How to make one in Rift

  1. Open Rift and add your before photo or clip.
  2. Tell Spark the change, such as “new haircut and a smart jacket, same pose”.
  3. Check the Draft. The price is on the Make button.
  4. Tap Make. The reveal, up to 15 seconds, is saved to Library.
  5. Add your joke text in the app you post to.

Variations

A messy desk to a tidy one. A dull sofa to a styled room. A dusty car to a clean one. A scruffy dog to a groomed one. To preview a haircut first, see try a new haircut or hair colour on a photo.

Questions people ask

Is a glow-up only about people?

No. Rooms, cars, pets and gardens are common too.

Do I need a before and after photo?

One photo is enough. Spark makes the after from it.

Who adds the joke text?

You do, in the app you post to. Rift does not add text yet.

Should the after be realistic?

Keep it honest. Change what you could change in real life, like outfit, hair or room.

Does it work on my own clip?

Yes. Rift can run a before-and-after format on your own clip.
