What is the hug-your-younger-self trend and how do you make one?

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

The hug-your-younger-self trend shows you as you are now stepping into a scene with yourself as a child, usually from an old family photo, and hugging them. It's quiet and emotional, and it works because everyone has that one photo. In Rift, add a childhood photo and a recent one, tell Spark the moment, and tap Make for a video up to 15 seconds.

The format is simple: two photos, decades apart, and one hug. The child is usually in the old photo’s setting, a birthday, a garden, a school photo backdrop. The adult walks in, kneels and hugs them. The child often looks up, unsure, then hugs back.

Questions people ask

What photos do I need?

One old photo of you as a child and one recent photo of you, both with your face clear.

Can the old photo be a faded print?

Yes. Photograph it flat in daylight. Ask Spark to restore it first if it's badly faded.

Can I do it with a parent or grandparent instead?

Yes. Many people make it with a parent's childhood photo, with their OK.

Can I restore the old photo first?

Yes. Rift can restore an old photo, and you can then use it in the scene.
