What is the same photo, better circumstances trend?

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

The better circumstances trend takes a real photo, often a slightly sad one like a selfie in a bus or a rainy queue, and keeps the same pose and face while upgrading everything around it: a yacht, a Paris balcony, a designer outfit, golden light. It's self-mocking and aspirational at once. In Rift, add the photo, tell Spark the new setting, and Make.

You post the real photo, then the same photo in the life you’d prefer. Nothing about you changes. Everything else does.

Classic upgrades

Make your own in Rift

  1. Add the original photo.
  2. Tell Spark: “Same pose, same face, now on a yacht deck at golden hour, four versions.”
  3. Check the Draft, Make and pick in Library.
  4. Post the pair: before, then after.

The how-to is in how to change the place, light or outfit in a photo.

Questions people ask

Will it keep my pose?

Say "same pose, same face" and Spark changes only the place, outfit and light.

Is it a picture or a video?

Usually a before-and-after pair of pictures. You can turn the after into a video.

What makes it funny?

The before. The more ordinary the original, the better the upgrade lands.

Can I do it with my car or pet?

Yes. A dog on a sofa becomes a dog on a yacht.
