How to make food and drink videos for your menu

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Add a photo of your dish or drink to Rift, tell Spark the shot you want, like a pour, a cut or a hand reaching in, and check the Draft. Tap Make and you get a short video of up to 15 seconds for your menu or feed. Rift is an iPhone app, made for small kitchens.

A menu photo says what you sell. A pour, a steam cloud or a cut through a warm pastry says how it will feel. For a small cafe or a home baker, a short video can be the reason someone comes in or messages to order.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Add the photo. Start a new chat in Rift and add your dish or drink.
  2. Describe the shot. One move and one setting.
  3. Add a hand if you like. Spark can put a hand in frame to pour or lift, which makes it feel made-to-order.
  4. Check the Draft. Spark shows the shots it plans.
  5. Make. Tap Make. Find it in your Library and post it from there.

Tips for a clean result

Beyond the menu

Use the same recipe for market stalls, meal prep, a cocktail at home or a birthday cake the night before. Make a few short clips and rotate them through the week.

Questions people ask

Can a hand appear in the video?

Yes. Ask for a hand pouring, dipping or reaching in. It makes food feel real.

Do I need professional photos?

No. Good daylight and a plain plate are enough.

Can I make a video of a dish I haven't cooked yet?

Yes, from a description. For your real menu, a photo of the actual dish is closer.

Will my sign or logo show up?

Details visible in your photo carry through. Add menu text and prices in the app you post to.

Can I show steam or a pour?

Yes. Describe the motion you want, such as steam rising or a pour into a glass, and check the Draft.
