How to make an AI remake look more real

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Start from a real-looking source: a clear, steady clip and an unfiltered, well-lit photo of you. Match the light of your photo to the clip, keep the scene simple, and ask for natural light and handheld camera if you want it to feel filmed. In Rift, tell Spark, Rift's video agent, 'keep it natural, no glossy look' and check the Draft before you Make.

A remake looks real mostly because of the clip and photo you start with, so the fixes below start there. If you are new to remakes, start with what a trend remake is.

Start with real inputs

Match the light

A sunny-day selfie in a nightclub clip looks pasted. Use a photo with similar light, or ask Spark to “match the light of the clip”.

Ask for natural

Keep it simple

Fewer people, fewer props, one action. Complex scenes have more places to go wrong.

In Rift

  1. Share the clip and add your photo.
  2. Tell Spark: “Keep it natural, handheld, no glossy look.”
  3. Check the Draft and tap Make.

Questions people ask

Why does my skin look plastic?

Usually a filtered or smoothed photo. Use an unfiltered one.

Why does it look too perfect?

Say "natural light, handheld, a bit of grain" for a filmed feel.

Should I tell people it's AI?

It's honest and often expected. Real-looking doesn't mean hiding it.

Does the source clip matter?

A lot. Sharp, steady, well-lit clips give real-looking remakes.
