Can people tell a video is AI?

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

Sometimes. Viewers often spot odd hands, drifting faces, smooth skin or movement that doesn't quite follow physics, but good clips can pass at a glance. Don't rely on being unnoticed: many apps ask you to label AI video, and honesty keeps trust. Rift is an iPhone app where Spark, Rift's video agent, plans a clip from your photos so it looks like you, and you decide whether to say it's AI.

A better question than “will they notice?” is “would they mind if they knew?” The answer decides how you post.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Tell Spark the scene in one plain line.
  2. Check the Draft. Look at what is promised, not only the style.
  3. Tap Make and watch it once with sound off, then once looking at hands and faces.
  4. Ask for another version if anything looks off.
  5. Post it and add a label if the app offers one.

Tips

Questions people ask

What gives an AI video away?

Hands, text on signs, faces that shift between shots, and movement that is too smooth or floaty.

Do I have to say a video is AI?

Platforms have their own rules on labels, so check each app's current rules before you post.

Can a clip look more natural?

Yes. Clear photos, simple scenes and a short clip help, and you can ask Spark for another version.

Is it wrong to post an AI video without saying so?

For a clearly playful clip, usually not. For anything that could fool people about something real, say it's AI.
