Is it okay to make an AI video of a friend?

Updated · Reviewed by The Rift team

Short answer

It's fine when your friend agrees first. Ask before you use their photo, show them the result before you post it, and take it down if they change their mind. Keep it kind: no videos that embarrass them or put words in their mouth. In Rift you can add a friend as a character from their photos, tell Spark, Rift's video agent, the scene, and check the Draft together.

AI video makes it easy to put anyone in a scene. Easy is not the same as okay, and the difference is whether they were asked.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Ask first. Say what you plan to make and where it might go.
  2. Add them as a character in Rift from their photos, so they stay the same across videos.
  3. Tell Spark the scene and check the Draft.
  4. Tap Make, then share the result with your friend from your Library before anyone else.
  5. Post only if they say so, and delete it if they change their mind.

Tips

Questions people ask

Do I need permission to use a friend's photo?

Yes. Ask first, every time, and say what the video will be and where you might post it.

What if my friend says no?

Then don't make it. A no is final, and you can ask whether a different idea would be fine.

Can I make a video of a friend as a surprise?

A private surprise gift is usually fine between close friends. Ask before it goes anywhere public.

What about someone else's kids?

Ask a parent, every time. If they say no, use yourself, a pet or a character you made.
