You may have heard “AI video” a lot and still not be sure what it means. This page uses plain words. There are three kinds of video apps, and they ask different things of you.
An editor app
An editor app gives you a timeline. You bring clips, cut them, line them up, add effects and export. You are in charge of every step. It is powerful, and it takes time to learn. If you enjoy cutting video, it is the right tool.
A template app
A template app gives you a fixed layout. You drop your photos or clips into slots, and the app arranges them the same way every time. It is quick and easy, and what you get looks like what everyone else makes. You cannot easily change the idea.
A video agent
A video agent works the other way round. You say what you want, or show a video you like, and the agent plans and edits it for you. The agent watches the clip, works out the shots, and puts you or your pet or your product in the right places. You check the plan and say go.
The difference is who does the work:
- In an editor, you do the editing.
- In a template app, you fill in slots.
- With an agent, you say the idea and the agent edits.
What using an agent feels like
In Rift the agent is Spark, a fox. You share a TikTok, a Reel or a Short, or you start with a line of words. Spark tells you what it understood, what it will do and what it needs, usually one photo. Then it sets up a Draft. The Draft is the plan, with the price on the Make button. You tap Make and the video is saved to your Library, up to 15 seconds.
You can also stop at any time. A stopped Make is not charged.
When to choose which
- Pick an editor for full control over your own footage.
- Pick a template for a fast, repeatable layout.
- Pick an agent when you have an idea or a video you like and do not want to learn editing.
Many people use more than one. You might remake a trend with Spark and then add the sound in the app where you post.
Where Rift fits
Rift is an iPhone app on the App Store, built around Spark. Its promise is simple: video, without the editing.
