Make one character in Rift and use it every week. Give it one odd trait and a place to be, and people will recognise it in a second.
What you need
- An iPhone with Rift.
- A few photos of the face you want, or a description for a made-up character.
- One odd trait: always very tall, always too calm, always holding a spoon.
- A list of five weekly situations.
Step by step
- Build the character. Tell Spark who it is and add a few photos if it is a real face. Save it as a character.
- Make episode one. Put the character in the first situation and Make.
- Save it as a format. Keep the Draft so the look and timing carry over.
- Run it each week. Open the format, change the situation in a line, and Make.
- Keep a log. Note each episode in your Library so you do not repeat a joke.
Lines to try with Spark
- “My character Mo, who is very tall and very calm, waiting in line at the bakery.”
- “Mo on a bus, holding a tiny umbrella, perfectly dry while everyone is soaked.”
- “Mo at the gym, gently picking up the heaviest weight and putting it down again.”
- “Mo in a library, reading a book that is smaller than his thumb.”
- “Mo meeting a dog bigger than he is, completely unbothered.”
Tips for a series that holds
- One trait, no more. Two traits blur the joke.
- Same frame. Keep the camera distance similar across episodes.
- Same outfit base. Keep one item the same, like a yellow scarf.
- Short list ahead. Write five situations before you start.
- Let viewers guess. The best episodes use the trait in a new way.
